Dreary to Delightful

A 1960s Basement Reimagined

When a growing family of seven found themselves feeling squeezed in their 1,600-square-foot 1960s home, they turned to Peters Cabinetry to transform their dark and dated basement into a light-filled, multifunctional space.

Originally defined by its dingy paneling and lack of warmth, the semi-finished basement offered untapped potential—but needed a thoughtful design to make it a true extension of the home. The homeowners envisioned a space that not only maximized functionality but also harmonized with the style of their main floor. Their goals were clear: create more living space, brighten the environment, and elevate utility areas like the laundry room.

Peters Cabinetry delivered with custom solutions that blend beauty and practicality. Sleek, built-in storage cabinets echo the kitchen’s design aesthetic, creating a seamless connection between levels. These storage cabinets keep clutter out of sight while their smooth surfaces ensure easy maintenance—a win for this busy family.

The laundry area was reimagined with a thoughtful touch: basket cubbies built into the clothes-folding counter by the stairs. Custom-designed to fit natural woven abaca baskets the family already owned, the cubbies offer each child their own designated space for clean clothes. The result? A tidy, organized system that’s as functional as it is family-friendly.

For the wife’s sewing needs, Peters Cabinetry designed a workspace with full-height cabinets, keeping supplies neatly stored yet within reach. Nearby, a built-in bookcase and woodstove anchor the cozy new living area, inviting the family to gather, read, or relax. Adjacent desks provide a dedicated space for homeschooling, perfectly tailored to the children’s needs.

The motivation for starting this project was to increase our functional living area and create welcoming spaces to come into where we spend many of our daily hours.

Thanks to Peters Cabinetry’s expert craftsmanship, this basement is no longer an afterthought. It’s a bright, intentional space that supports the rhythm of this family’s everyday life while elevating the home’s overall design.
